Chinese Pronouns

BASIC PRONOUNS IN THE CHINESE MANDARIN

Singular Pronouns

     wǒ  –  我  – I, me

     nǐ    –  你 – You

     nín  –  您 – You. Respectful and honourable form of referring to your boss,

teacher, customer, elderly person, etc.

   tā    –  他  – He, him; for males only

               她  – She, her; for females only

               它  – It; for non-humans, animals, plant, furniture

Plural Pronouns

To get the plural forms, we add “men” – “们” to the singular pronouns.

  wǒmen –    我们     – We

  nǐmen  –   你们       – You

  tāmen  –    他们      – They – for males and females

        她们      – They –  for females only

                   它们      – They – for non-humans, animals, plants, furniture.

  The respectful term “nín” does not have a plural form so it’s simply “nǐmen”.

Now, Let’s practice

How do you say

       “I”                    –  wǒ

                              “You”                               –  nǐ

                               “He/Him/She/Her/It”   –  tā

                               “We”                                 –  wǒmen

                                “They”                             –  tāmen

How would you greet a friend or neighbor?

            你好!

  nǐhǎo! 

    Hello !

If you walk into a classroom, how would you greet your teacher?

  老师, 您好 !

  lǎoshī, nín hǎo! 

  Hello Teacher !

How would you greet a couple of friends when you meet them?

  你们好! 

  nǐmen hǎo! 

  Hello Everyone !

How would someone or a neighbor ask after your parents?

  他们好吗?

  tāmen hǎo ma? 

  How are they?

How do you greet everyone, maybe when delivering a speech?

  大家好 !

  dàjiā hǎo

  Hello Everyone !
